Every game is scored differently. Each play uses a score template: a description of how the game is scored. You enter scores the way the game counts them, and Kallax.io can work out who won.

Score templates

You don’t have to start from scratch. When you log a game, Kallax.io picks the template for you:
  1. the last template you used for that game;
  2. otherwise the most popular template made by the community;
  3. otherwise a simple score where the highest wins, and the Score template section starts open so you can set it up.
The Score template section shows the template’s name, who made it if it isn’t yours, and a one-line summary such as “Scoring sheet · highest score wins · 6 rows”. Open it to change anything. A template you set up yourself shows as Custom template until you share it. Use Browse templates to see every template for the game: Your templates, then the Public templates, the most used first. Each one shows how many plays use it and who made it. Choose Use to switch. Changing a template only changes it for this play. Other plays, and other people’s templates, stay as they were. A template that someone shared publicly is never changed: if you tweak it, you get your own copy. Choices that don’t go together, such as a ranking with a summed team score, are greyed out with the reason.

What a template sets

Score type

Rounds and scoring sheets show a total row that adds up as you type.

Who wins

Highest score wins, Lowest score wins for games such as golf, or Manual to pick the winner yourself even though you keep score. With Ranking it’s always the best place, and with Binary (win/loss) it’s always manual.

Participants

  • Individual: everyone plays for themselves.
  • Team score summed: players are on teams, and a team’s score is the sum of its members’ scores.
  • Team score shared: players are on teams, and each team has one score, entered once. This also suits games without a number, where you just pick the winning team.
With shared team scores, everyone starts on one team, which is exactly a co-op game such as Pandemic or The Crew: you win or lose together. Split the players into more teams and it becomes a team game.

Multiple winners and draws

  • Multiple winners lets you pick more than one winner when you pick the result yourself. With teams, a team always wins together.
  • Draws are possible is on by default. Turn it off for games that can’t end in a draw: a tie then has to be settled by picking the winner.

Attributes

Attributes are extra fields filled in for each player, such as a faction, a colour or how they died. Add one with a name and, if you like, Options separated by commas, such as Red, green, blue. Without options it’s free text, and Other text allowed lets people type something that isn’t in the list. Attributes are only noted down. Nothing is worked out from them. When the game has teams, the Team is an attribute too. It can’t be removed, but you can give it options, such as English and Vikings.

Share your scoring

Once you know a scoring setup works, you can offer it to everyone. When you finish a play that used your own template, the win screen has Share this template publicly. Give it a Template name, which is visible to everyone, and you’re credited as its author. If a public template with exactly the same rules already exists, Kallax.io uses that one instead, so its author keeps the credit.

Enter scores

  • Negative scores and decimals are fine.
  • Type sums such as 3+25+19-6. The total shows underneath.
  • A missing score isn’t a zero. Leave it empty if a player has no score.
  • In rounds and on scoring sheets, an empty cell counts as 0 once a player has a score anywhere.
  • With a shared team score, you enter the score once for the team.
You can switch between Score, Rounds and Scoring sheet at any time. It only changes how the scores are shown: a score typed as 3+25 shows as two rounds. Switching between points and places asks first, because the numbers then mean something else.

Who won

When you press Finish play, Kallax.io proposes each player’s result:
  • The best score wins, highest or lowest. With a ranking, 1st wins.
  • A tie for first place is a shared win. If everyone ties, it’s a draw. A draw doesn’t count as a win.
  • A player without a score is left out of the comparison, marked No score and proposed as lost.
  • With teams, the team with the best total wins, and every member gets the team’s result.
  • In co-op games, one choice sets All won or All lost for everyone.
  • With Binary (win/loss) or Manual, you pick the winners.
To change a single player’s result to won, draw or lost, choose Edit on the finished play. A changed result is marked, so you can tell it from the proposed one. If you edit the scores later, the proposal is updated, but results you changed by hand stay, unless you agree to replace them.

Common cases

The win screen asks whether the tie was broken by a tiebreaker. Pick the winner, and the other tied players are marked as lost. Keep as tied goes back to the shared win. If the game never ends in a draw, turn off Draws are possible and you’re always asked to pick the winner.
Use Binary (win/loss), set Participants to Team score shared, give the Team the options Village and Werewolf, and set each player’s team. Pick the winning team. Add an attribute such as “Died in round” if you want to note it. You still won with your team.
Use Binary (win/loss) with Team score shared, and give the Team its options, such as Good and Evil. On the win screen, set each player’s team under Anything to add? and pick the winning side.
Set it up as co-op: Binary (win/loss) with Team score shared, everyone on one team. Finish with All won, then choose Edit and change the player who failed their own objective to lost. Only that player’s result is marked as changed.
Use Score with Team score shared, and keep everyone on one team. Enter the missions completed once, as the Score for everyone, and mark whether you won.
Use the score type the game needs, with Team score shared if there are sides, and add a Faction attribute. Each player’s team and faction show on their row, in the standings and on the win screen.
Add only yourself, and use Binary (win/loss) or a score.
