# Chat

> Message friends, talk with your community and coordinate events in Kallax.io chat.

Chat lets you talk with friends, fellow community members and everyone going to an event, without leaving Kallax.io.

Open **Chats** from the main menu to see all your conversations. You need to be logged in.

## Your chats

Your chats are grouped into sections:

| Section            | What it is                                                                                                                                                |
| ------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Official**       | A chat with the people who build Kallax.io. Ask questions or share ideas. We are humans and look after it in our spare time, so replies can take a while. |
| **Event**          | Group chats for events you take part in.                                                                                                                  |
| **Direct Message** | Private conversations with friends.                                                                                                                       |
| **Community**      | Chats for communities you belong to.                                                                                                                      |

Chats with new messages are marked **NEW** and moved to the top of their section.

## Start a chat

* **With a friend**: go to **Friends**, open the **⋮** menu on your friend's card and choose **Send message**. See [Friends](/guides/friends).
* **With an event**: open the event page. If the host has turned on the chat room, you can join the conversation there. See [Events](/guides/events).
* **With a community**: open the community and go to the **Chat** tab. See [Communities](/guides/communities).

## Send, edit and delete messages

Type in the **Chat message** box and click **Send**. Messages can be up to 512 characters.

To change or remove one of your own messages, open its menu and choose **Edit** or **Delete**. From anyone's message you can also choose **View profile**.

  Keep chats friendly, and never share your password or other sensitive information in a chat.

## Mute a chat

Too many notifications from a busy chat? Click the bell icon next to it in your chat list to **Mute** it. You stop getting notifications, but the chat is still marked **NEW** when there are messages you have not read, so you can catch up when it suits you. Click the bell again to **Unmute**.

## Remove a chat

Click the bin icon next to a chat to remove it from your list. You can rejoin at any time by opening it again.

## Connection problems

If you see **Lost connection?**, click **Reconnect**. If a chat says **This chat is not open to you**, you are not a member of that event or community, or the chat is only visible to certain roles.
