# Sessions and game nights

> A session keeps the games of one sitting together, with the date, the place and notes. Long games can span several sessions.

<Info>
  This is a **beta** feature. See [Get beta access](/experimental/play-logging#get-beta-access).
</Info>

A session is *when and where* you played: a game night at home, an afternoon at a café, an evening of a campaign. It holds every game played, with the date, the place and notes, entered once for all of them.

A play is *what and who*. Because the two are separate, one session can hold several plays, and one play can stretch over several sessions.

You never create a session yourself. Starting a game puts it in a session for you.

## Your current session

When you start a game at the table, it goes into your current session: your most recent session, if it started less than 12 hours ago. Otherwise a new session starts.

So a warm-up game and the main game end up together, and tomorrow's game gets a session of its own.

The form always shows where the game goes, such as **Add to your session from 18:00**. Use **Change** and pick **New session** for a separate one, for example when you play again in the evening after an afternoon session. The recent sessions of other people that you can see are listed there too, but they are never picked for you.

<Tip>
  Sessions don't need to be ended or closed. Just stop adding games to them.
</Tip>

## The session page

Open a session from the **Play History** page. It shows the date and start time, whose session it is, the total time, the place and the notes, followed by its games. Each game is one row with the players, their scores, the winner and the time played.

**Add play to session** logs another game here.

If you started the session, use the pencil to change its date, start time, place (**Where**) and **Notes about the session**. The place can be a community on Kallax.io, such as a board game café, an address, or anything you type.

<Note>
  Linking a session to an event is coming soon.
</Note>

## Continue another day

A game can be spread over several sessions, such as a Gloomhaven campaign or a long game of Twilight Imperium.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Pause">
    When you stop for the day, press **Pause**. The game stays under **In progress** on the **Play History** page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Continue">
    Next time, open the game and press **Continue**. More than 12 hours later, it continues in a new session, and the timer starts at zero for that evening. The arrow next to **Continue** lets you choose **Continue in a new session** or another recent session yourself.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Finish">
    Press **Finish play** when the game is over. However many evenings it took, it counts as one play with one result.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Once a game has been played in more than one session, its page lists them under **Sessions**, with the time played in each.

## Time

* Time is counted per game and per session, so breaks between games don't count.
* A session's time is the time of its games added up. Two games played at the same time, at two tables, both count.
* The timer saves its time when you pause or finish. If you forgot to pause, or to start the timer, choose **Edit** on the game and type the **Minutes** played in each session.
* If a timer is still running from an earlier session, the game says so, and **Continue** starts it again from now.

## Several tables, one game night

Everyone in a session sees all of it: every game, who played, the results, and the session's date, place and notes.

Anyone in a session can add their own games to it, for example for the second table at your game night. Open the session and choose **Add play to session**. The game belongs to whoever logs it, even if the person who started the session isn't playing.

* Only the person who started the session can change its date, place and notes.
* Only the person who logged a game can change that game.

## Who sees a session

You see a session if you started it, or if you're in any of its games. Through it, you see all of its games.

If you see someone else's long game only because it was played at your session, you don't see its other sessions.

## Move a game to another session

Did a game end up in the wrong session? Choose **Edit** on the game and open its **Sessions** section. There you can **Move to another session**, **Add to another session** or **Remove from session** (a game always stays in at least one). Its time moves with it.

<Note>
  If the person who started a session deletes their account, the session stays, but nobody can change it any more and no games can be added to it. The games in it can still be changed. See [Who can change a play](/experimental/players-and-identities#who-can-change-a-play).
