# Coming from BoardGameGeek

> How play logging on Kallax.io compares to BoardGameGeek: what things are called, how to log common games, and what you can track here.

<Info>
  This is a **beta** feature. See [Get beta access](/experimental/play-logging#get-beta-access).
</Info>

If you've logged plays on BoardGameGeek, most of this will feel familiar. The biggest differences:

* A game night is a **session** that holds all of its games.
* A long game is **one play**, even when it's played over many evenings.
* You enter scores **the way the game is scored**, and the winner is worked out for you.
* **One person logs** a game for everyone at the table.

<Note>
  Importing your play history from BoardGameGeek (coming soon), and from BG Stats (coming soon), will make it easy to bring your old plays along. Until then, log your new plays here as you play them.
</Note>

## What things are called

| BoardGameGeek | Kallax.io | How it differs |
| - | - | - |
| Play | Play | On Kallax.io, a play can span several sessions and still be one play. |
| No equivalent | Session | One sitting, such as a game night, holding all of its games. |
| Date | Session date | A play played over several evenings has a date for each. |
| Location | Place | Entered once per session: a community on Kallax.io, an address or any text. |
| Length | Time | Timed live or typed in, counted per session and added up. |
| Quantity | No equivalent | Log each play on its own. **Rematch** starts the next one straight away. |
| Incomplete | In progress, or unfinished | In progress means you'll continue it. Unfinished means you stopped without finishing, and nobody wins. |
| Leave out of win stats | No equivalent | An unfinished play has no winners. |
| Comments | Notes | On the play, on the session, and for each player. |
| Name | Player | Saved as a guest identity, so you can pick them again, and link them to their account later. Or added as a guest, without saving them. |
| Username | Friend in the play | Friends see the play in their own history, and can confirm it. |
| Start position | Turn order | **Pick starting player** picks one at random. |
| Team/Color | Team, and extra fields | The team decides the result. Colour, faction and similar are extra fields you add to the game's score template. |
| Score | Score | Entered the way the game is scored: a score, rounds, a scoring sheet or a ranking. |
| New | First time playing | |
| Win | Result | Won, lost or draw, proposed from the scores. |
| Rating | No equivalent | Not part of a play. |

## How to log common games

| Situation | On BoardGameGeek | On Kallax.io |
| - | - | - |
| A quick game after dinner | Log the play with the date, length, players and scores, and tick **Win** | Start it at the table and press **Finish play**. The winner is proposed from the scores. |
| A game night with three games | Three plays, each with the date, location and players | One session with all three games, and the place and notes entered once. |
| A campaign over five evenings | Five separate plays, or one play with the total length | One play over five sessions: the time of each evening, one result at the end, counted once. |
| A tie for first | Tick **Win** for both players | Proposed as a shared win. To break it, pick the winner on the win screen. |
| A co-op game, such as Pandemic | Tick **Win** for everyone, or for nobody | Put everyone on one team with **Team score shared**: one choice, **All won** or **All lost**, for the whole table. |
| A team game, such as Codenames | Write the team in **Team/Color** and tick **Win** for each winner | Use **Team score shared**, give the players a team and pick the winning team. |
| Lowest score wins | Tick **Win** for the lowest score yourself | Choose **Lowest score wins** once. Your next plays of the game remember it. |
| Wingspan's scoring categories | One total per player, with the categories in the comments if you want them | A scoring sheet with a row per category, adding up to the total. |
| Places in a racing game, such as Heat | The place in the score or the comments | **Ranking**: pick each player's place. |
| A card game over five rounds | One total per player | **Rounds**: a score per round, adding up to the total. |
| The same game three times in a row | **Quantity** 3 | Three plays, each with its own result. **Rematch** starts the next one. |
| A game you gave up on | Tick **Incomplete** | Choose **Mark as unfinished**. Or pause it and continue another day. |
| An expansion | A play of the expansion as well, or a mention in the comments | Ticked as part of the play. |
| A game with a friend | You log it. For it to be in their history, they log it too. | You log it, and it's in their history straight away. They can confirm the result. |

## What you can track here that you can't on BoardGameGeek

* **A timer at the table**, with pause and continue, that keeps running if you close the app.
* **Game nights as sessions**, with all of an evening's games, the place and notes entered once, and the total time.
* **Long games as one play** across many evenings, with the time of each evening and one result.
* **Scoring that fits the game**: rounds, scoring sheets with named rows, rankings, co-op and teams, kept in score templates that are remembered for the next play and can be shared with the community.
* **Winners worked out for you**, including ties, lowest score wins and teams. Results you change by hand are marked.
* **Draws**, and a result for each player, so a team's win counts for everyone on the team.
* **A note for each player**, and extra fields such as a faction, a colour or a cause of death.
* **Expansions**, suggested from your collection and ticked as part of the play.
* **One shared record**: friends in your play see it in their own history and can confirm the result, instead of everyone logging their own copy.
* **Guest identities you can link later**: when someone you logged as a guest identity joins Kallax.io, link the identity to their account, and your history together shows up for them too.
* **Games in progress**, to continue another day, kept apart from games you gave up on.

## What BoardGameGeek has that Kallax.io doesn't, yet

* Logging several plays at once with a quantity.
* A rating of the game for each player in a play.
* Leaving a play out of win statistics.
* Logging a game you played in the past, on any date: for now, add it to a session that exists.
* Statistics about your plays (coming soon).
* Importing your plays from BoardGameGeek and BG Stats (coming soon).
